Role Summary
We are recruiting two Clinical Research Fellows as PhD students in the area of paediatric oncology. The appointees will be registered on the ‘The Azaylia Childhood Cancer PhD Programme’, with funding available for up to 4 years. The two appointees will undertake project-specific research and training in this area as part of an established academic team on one of the following projects:
Project 1: Linking phenotype to genotype in paediatric Acute Myeloid Leukaemia with GATA2 mutations.
Supervised by Dr Rui Monteiro.
In this project, the candidate will be investigating how different GATA2 mutations found in paediatric AML affect blood stem cell function and predispose to the onset of leukaemia.
Project 2: Identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities in paediatric AML harbouring KMT2A rearrangements.
Supervised by Dr Paloma Garcia.
In this project, the candidate will be investigating how different KMT2Ar mutations found in paediatric patients affect treatment response.
Candidates may indicate whether they wish to be considered for one or both projects.
Their main objective is to produce international quality research data and present a thesis for PhD viva voce examination. These posts align with current strategy in the Department of Cancer and Genomic Sciences to strengthen in the areas of clinical oncology and translational cancer research in Birmingham. It is an expectation that the appointees will help establish stronger links between the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and The University of Birmingham and enhance, directly, translational research capacity within the Department.
Main Duties
- To plan and develop research contributions to subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques
- To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques, models and methods in collaboration with colleagues
- To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars, attendance at conferences etc
- To contribute to the production of research reports and publications
- To analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate ideas based on outcomes
- Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- Medical degree, (optional) membership of one of the Royal Colleges
- Appropriate levels of medical training (ST1-ST4) with an interest in haematology, oncology, paediatric haematology or similar area
- Possesses Research experience in a wet lab setting
- Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge to undertake both clinical responsibilities and research within established research programmes
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
Dimensions
The student will be part of an academic Team comprising at least two senior academics who will act as project supervisors. The team might also comprise post-doctoral fellows, technicians and other PGR students.
Planning and Organising
Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate
Contribute to the planning of research projects
Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
Problem Solving and decision making
The direction of the research will be determined by the academic supervisory team in discussion with the student
Internal and External relationships
Liaise with research and support staff on routine matters and with staff within clinical department
OH/DBS required
